About Reverse Geocoding

Reverse geocoding converts geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) into human-readable addresses. This tool provides detailed address information including:

  • Complete street address
  • City, state, and country information
  • Postal codes where available
  • Nearby landmarks and points of interest

Note: Address accuracy may vary depending on the location and available mapping data. Remote or rural areas may have limited address information.

What Is Reverse Geocoding?

Reverse geocoding converts latitude and longitude coordinates into a human-readable address. Enter a coordinate pair such as 40.7580, −73.9855 and the tool returns the nearest address -- in this case Times Square, Manhattan, New York -- with the street, city, postcode and country. It is the opposite of geocoding, which turns an address into coordinates.

Common Uses

  • Find the address of a photo from its GPS (EXIF) coordinates.
  • Turn GPS logs or delivery drop points into readable addresses.
  • Check what is at a set of coordinates someone sent you.
  • Clean up datasets that have coordinates but no address.

Need the Opposite?

To turn an address into coordinates, use Address to Coordinates, or search it directly on the latitude and longitude finder.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find an address from latitude and longitude?

Enter the latitude and longitude above (or paste them together) and press Convert. The nearest street address, city, postcode and country are shown and can be copied.

What format should the coordinates be in?

Decimal degrees work best (e.g. 51.5007, −0.1246). Use a minus sign for south latitudes and west longitudes. DMS pastes with hemisphere letters are also accepted.

Why do I get only a city or country?

There is no street address near that point in the map data -- common in rural areas, water and wilderness.

What is the difference between geocoding and reverse geocoding?

Geocoding turns an address into coordinates. Reverse geocoding turns coordinates into an address.
